Putin informs Assad about Russia's deal with Turkey

Russian President Vladimir Putin informed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about the agreement on the safe zone in Syria reached between Russia and Turkey on Tuesday, the Kremlin confirmed.

Russian presidential spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Assad thanked Putin for his actions and "expressed his full support of the results of the work, as well as the readiness of the Syrian border guards to patrol the border together with the Russian military police." Peskov also noted that Putin's meeting with Erdogan lasted six hours before the memorandum of understanding was reached.

Putin and Erdogan presented their deal on Syria on Tuesday. Implementation of the deal will start on October 23, one day after Turkey's deal on the ceasefire in Syria with the United States expires. Assad had been critical of Turkey's previous ceasefire deal.
