Report: Giuliani pushed for Shokin to get US visa

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent told members of the United States Congress this week that Rudy Giuliani asked White House officials early this year to pressure the Department of State after it refused to grant a visa for the deposed Ukrainian prosecutor general, CNN learned. Unnamed sources revealed the testimony has shown that Viktor Shokin's arrival was of particular importance for President Donald Trump's lawyer, who is one of the key persons in the current impeachment inquiry, under fire for allegedly meddling with the policy on the former Soviet state.

Giuliani has acknowledged earlier that he wanted to interview the deposed Ukrainian official in person with the apparent aim to obtain information that would hamper the position of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Shokin, who lost the position after the US vice president at the time urged the government in Kyiv to replace him, never got the visa and Trump's lawyer interviewed him via Skype.

Shokin has argued that he was fired in 2016 for intending to look into the activity of gas company Burisma, which had Biden's son Hunter Biden on the executive board.
