Riyadh to face severe punishment if Khashoggi was killed - Trump

United State President Donald Trump promised to inflict "severe punishment" if Saudi Arabia is behind the disappearance of the Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. In an excerpt of the interview with the CBS's 60 Minutes aired on Saturday, Trump said that the US would be "very upset" if the accusations against Riyadh proved to be true, but added that the Saudi officials were "vehemently denying" the claims.

However, Trump hinted that he might not impose economic sanctions against Saudi Arabia if it indeed murdered Khashoggi because of the major military equipment ordered by the country from the US. Trump claimed that he does not wish to lose US jobs involved in these military orders, adding there are "other ways of punishment." He went on to say that "there is a lot at stake" in the investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance due to the fact that he is "a journalist." Trump's full interview with 60 Minutes will be broadcast on Monday at 1:30 am CET.

Earlier today, Turkish media reported that Khashoggi's alleged torture and murder were recorded on the Apple Watch he was wearing on the day he disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and then transferred to an iPhone carried by his fiancee outside the building. However, a Saudi official dismissed the accusations against his country, describing them as "lies and baseless allegations."
