Rouhani: US poses serious threat to M. East stability

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated on Friday that the United States represents a serious threat to the stability in the Middle East and the whole world. Speaking at a meeting of Council of Heads of States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Rouhani accused Washington of violating international rules in the past two years by using its "economic, financial and military capabilities" to implement an aggressive foreign policy approach.

The Iranian president also took the occasion to criticize the US for not just unilaterally pulling out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but also forcing other signatories to violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorses the 2015 nuclear accord.

Rouhani's remarks come amid the latest escalation of tensions in the Middle East following yesterday's attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The US blamed Iran for the incident and deployed a guided-missile destroyer to the Persian Gulf, while the Islamic Republic dismissed the claims and urged the international community to prevent "the reckless and dangerous policies and practices of the US and its regional allies in heightening the tensions in the region."
