Russia expels certain US embassy staff members

The Russian Foreign Ministry ordered on Monday members of the United States embassy staff that have been in Moscow for more than three years to leave the country by January 31, 2022.

The announcement comes the day after Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov accused Washinton of expelling Moscow's representatives by introducing a similar three-year rule for one person's stay. Antonov claimed other embassies' employees are all allowed to work there for five years. The US State Department used the ruling to explain its decision to have 27 Russian officials leave the country, while Moscow claimed Washington is trying to expel 55 of its representatives.

The ministry added that, if the US does not compromise on the status of Russia's diplomats, another group of its officials in Moscow will have to leave by July 1.
