Schengen can't be taken for granted - Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed out on Monday the changes that the coronavirus pandemic has caused to the Schengen arrangement, underlining that the Schengen area is "too precious" to be "taken for granted."

During her speech at the Schengen Forum, Von der Leyen warned that internal border checks were reintroduced by the member countries far more times since 2015 that was the case before that, and invited the EU members to "confront these challenges head on."

"Europeans have grown to rely on Schengen. Today it is essential for our economy and for our way of life. And we all have a responsibility to make it work," Von der Leyen concluded.
