Spanish PM Rajoy loses no-confidence vote, Sanchez to replace him

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy lost on Friday a vote of no confidence in the country's parliament, with 180 members of the parliament voting in favor of the motion, 169 against and one abstention. Spanish Socialist Workers' Party leader Pedro Sanchez will replace Rajoy ahead of a possible general election.

Rajoy is the first prime minister in the modern history of Spain to be ousted in such a vote, following more than 12 hours of debate over two days. He admitted defeat earlier in the day, stating that it was "an honor" to serve as the head of government. Sanchez led the no-confidence motion with the support of various smaller opposition parties, spurred by corruption allegations against Rajoy's People’s Party. Ahead of the vote, Sanchez vowed to "sign a new page in the history of democracy in our country."
