Tokyo sets new daily record with 3,865 COVID cases

Tokyo health officials confirmed on Thursday that the number of new coronavirus cases in the metropolitan area increased by 3,865 over the past 24 hours, setting a new daily record.

This makes the third consecutive day that the record has been broken, and the second that the capital sees cases rise by more than 3,000. At the same time, cases nearly doubled when compared to the same period last week.

At a press conference earlier, Katsunobu Kato, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, stated that the country has "never experienced the expansion of the infections of this magnitude," while the International Olympic Committee denied accusations that the Olympics may be the reason for the surge.
