Trump announces sanctions against Turkey

United States President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will shortly be issuing an executive order to impose sanctions against Turkey in response to Ankara's military operation in Syria. He noted the measures will target Turkish officials and other persons who "enable, facilitate and finance" Turkey's "heinous acts" in Syria.

"The Order will authorize a broad range of consequences, including financial sanctions, the blocking of property, and barring entry into the United States," the US president stated. Trump added the US will also hike tariffs on Turkish steel imports to 50% and "immediately" stop trade negotiations with Ankara.

Turkey launched a military operation against Kurdish forces and the Islamic State (ISIS) fighters last week and insisted it intends to complete the operation despite criticism from the US and other NATO members. Meanwhile, Trump pulled American troops out of Syria after refusing to join Turkey's operation.
