Truss: Northern Ireland situation very difficult

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stated on Monday that the situation concerning the United Kingdom and the European Union's respective stances on Northern Ireland is "very difficult" and called for "urgent progress" in the discussions.

Speaking after her meeting with European Commission Vice-President for Interinstitutional Affairs Maros Sefcovic, Truss still insisted that "there has been progress." "I want to work constructively with the EU to be able to achieve that and we need to do it in short order. [...] We believe there is a deal to be done. [...] We want goods to be able to flow freely," she told reporters.

After their encounter earlier in the day in Brussels, Truss and Sefcovic issued a joint statement in which they "reaffirmed their shared desire for a positive EU–UK relationship" and confirmed they will meet again later in the week.
