Turkey won't recognize Russia's annexation of Ukrainian provinces

Turkey's Foreign Ministry on Saturday said it does not recognize Russia's move to annex four occupied regions of eastern Ukraine.

"This decision, which constitutes a grave violation of the established principles of international law, cannot be accepted," the ministry explained in a statement. It noted that Ankara rejected Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and that it will continue to back Ukrainian independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. "We reiterate our support to the resolution of this war, the severity of which keeps growing, based on a just peace that will be reached through negotiations," the ministry concluded.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin formally declared Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia to be part of Russia after holding referendums in the regions.
