UK MP's death examined by counter-terror police

Essex Police Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington confirmed on Friday the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command (CTC) is now leading the investigation of the death of Sir David Amess, the Member of the British Parliament for Southend West.

"We made it clear at the time of the incident that we did not believe there was any immediate threat to anyone else in the area," Harrington stated. "It will be for investigators to determine whether or not this may have been a terrorist incident."

Amess died earlier in the day from the wounds sustained when an unknown man attacked him during the meeting of his constituency. Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his "shock and sadness" at the occurrence, describing Amess as "one of the kindest, nicest, most gentle people in politics."
