UN's Guterres: Independent tanker attack probe needed

An independent probe into the oil tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman is needed, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in New York on Friday. The Portuguese diplomat added that he believes it is up to the UN Security Council to form an investigation panel that could determine the facts of the case.

Guterres said: "It's very important to know the truth and it's very important that responsibilities are clarified. Obviously that can only be done if there is an independent entity that verifies those facts." Additionally, he confirmed that he contacted a number of states concerned in the dispute to ask them to work on the deescalation of tensions.

The UN official noted he is prepared to mediate between the United States and Iran after Washington accused Tehran of being behind the attacks, which Iran strongly denies. However, Guterres stressed that there is no existing mechanism that would help him mediate between the countries and said the only way to do so would be if the US and Iran agreed to such an arrangement.
