US, EU, Canada slap new sanctions on Russia over Ukraine

The United States, the European Union and Canada imposed fresh sanctions against Russian individuals involved in last November's incident near the Kerch Strait in Ukraine, the deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, Robert Palladino, confirmed on Friday. In addition, Washington introduced punitive measures against six Russian defense firms, two individuals connected with November elections in eastern Ukraine and two Russian energy and construction companies operating in Crimea.

"In the five years since Russia started its campaign of aggression against Ukraine, we have stood firmly with our Transatlantic partners in opposition to Russia’s malign and illegal actions, including its attack near the Kerch Strait," Palladino stated. "We call upon Russia to immediately return to Ukraine the seized vessels and detained crewmembers, and keep the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov open to ships transiting to and from Ukrainian ports. We also call on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters."

Earlier today, the European Council imposed sanctions on 8 individuals in response to "escalation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov and the violations of international law by Russia, which used military force with no justification." The council reiterated it demands the "immediate release of all detained Ukrainian seamen as well as the return of the seized vessels and free passage of all ships through the Kerch Strait."
