US monitor 'threatening' China's ZTE - report

The United States-appointed independent monitor of Chinese telecom giant ZTE is seeking to extend his existing term and threatening the company if it refuses the request, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The monitor, a Dallas lawyer named James Stanton, has reportedly told the company he had evidence that it violated "the terms of its probation" without providing evidence and separately telling a source about leveraging his "close personal friendship" with the judge overseeing the case. Stanton told the WSJ's reporters that there were "extensive inaccuracies" in the report, but refused to comment further.

Stanton was assigned to ZTE after the company pleaded guilty to the Justice Department's charges of illegally exporting technologies to Iran, and subsequently withholding information from investigators.
