US retail sales increase 0.8% in May

Seasonally adjusted advance estimates of retail and food services sales for May in the United States increased 0.8% to $502 billion compared to the previous month, the US Census Bureau said in a report released on Thursday. On an annual basis, retail and food services were up 5.9%.

Meanwhile, total sales for the period from March through May rose 5.2% compared to a year ago, while total sales from March to April were upwardly revised from 0.2% to up 0.4%.

At the same time, retail trade sales rose 0.8% in May compared to the month before and jumped 6% year-on-year. Gasoline stations increased by 17.7% on an annual basis, while nonstore retailers added 9.1% compared to the previous year.
