US sanctions Russia over 'harmful foreign activities'

The White House confirmed United States President Joe Biden has signed an executive order declaring a national emergency and imposing sanctions on Russia "for actions by its government and intelligence services against US sovereignty and interests."

The White House described the order as a "signal that the US will impose costs in a strategic and economically impactful manner on Russia if it continues or escalates its destabilizing international actions." Those moves include "malicious cyber activity" through SolarWinds Orion platform, threats to global cybersecurity, and Moscow's alleged involvement in the Taliban attacks against the US in Afghanistan.

The White House's statement stressed Biden's previous remarks during a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Washington wanted a "stable and predictable relationship" with Moscow, as well as the administration's dedication to "defend[ing] our national interests [from] Russian government actions that seek to harm us."
