US Senate passes $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus

The United States Senate approved the $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package early on Saturday after more than 24 hours of debating the legislation and amendments to it. The bill will now be returned to the House of Representatives for final approval.

The package passed in a 50-49 vote, with all Democratic lawmakers voting in favor and all Republicans against it. GOP Senator Dan Sullivan was absent due to a personal emergency. The bill includes a $1,400 check for every qualifying citizen, $300 per week in unemployment benefits until September 6, as well as provisions for states, education and healthcare. "This bill will deliver more help to more people than anything the federal government has done in decades," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer ahead of the vote.
