Verizon, AT&T delay 5G deployment near some airports

Verizon and AT&T said on Tuesday they agreed to "voluntarily" delay the deployment of C-band 5G technology around some airports in the United States, but didn't say how long the delay will last.

The move comes after major US airlines asked the administration of President Joe Biden for "immediate intervention," warning the 5G deployment near major airports could have an "incalculable" impact on the nation's commerce.

Biden thanked Verizon and AT&T for agreeing to the delay and promising to work with the Department of Transportation "on safe 5G deployment at this limited set of locations" scheduled for Wednesday. "This agreement will avoid potentially devastating disruptions to passenger travel, cargo operations, and our economic recovery, while allowing more than 90% of wireless tower deployment to occur as scheduled," the president noted.
